Class Location
In my career of teaching Nepali language to foreign students in Kathmandu for about ten years, most of the students have come to my house, located in Sanepa, Lalitpur. In some occasions, I delivered classes in the students’ own preferred places. If I have to instruct a large group, I prefer the second option and in this option taxi fare is added in the tuition fee. So far I have mostly taught women. The number varied from single individual to a group or twenty women. For men, I have a list of university professors in different parts of the valley and I manage the instructors in the nearest distance possible so that the learners don’t have to waste time in commuting through busy and dusty roads of Kathmandu. I can provide them the teachers in any part of the valley, inside or even outside the ring road.
Teaching Method
No particular or specific method is possible to teach Nepali language to the foreigners. In most cases the methods depend on the learner’s language background, age, sex, education and even the nature of job he/she does. I have experiences of teaching Ph. D. holders to illiterate women. I prefer to use eclectic method while teaching Nepali language. In my collection, I have about a dozen books written by Nepali and foreign writers and prefer to prescribe the text book after one week’s class or so. The text books are complemented with audio and video materials.Language learning is considered a boring job but I create fun in teaching learning activities.
